Lady Whimsy's Characters of Kalidore: Human Type
All secondary humanoid characters can be found here; do note that principal characters have been allotted their own profile page which can be found through the links below. Unicorns character links are provided below as well for ease of searching ;D
Ethon is a Dar'keeli defector, fed up with the regime and disgusted with the universe in general. At the point in time we meet him the passion for his lifework has drained and Ethon just feels exhausted with everything, old before his time. In reflection, it is safe to say he had little impact in the grand scheme of things anyways, and the weight of that has taken its toll. Old regrets and bad dreams keep him restless and detached, with a maintained level of disinterest in the world.
Physical Appearance & Apparel: Despite clean features and good bone structure, Ethon appears somewhat older then he is, faint lines worn by worry across his face and complexion coloured by nights of fitful sleep. He is fit but not overtly muscular, his stature lean and efficient, like a bird of prey there is no excess body fat. His eyes too are copper coloured like that bird, and his dark brown hair glints gleaming bronze in the sunlight.
Unlike most Dar’keeli however his skin is remarkably free from any patterning, save for a tracked pattern that runs up his spine and back of his neck. He was very self conscious about this omission in youth and dressed to hide skin; this he continues to this day, though the reason now is mainly to cover the scissored scars that swathe his torso and body.
Whatever the weather he rarely goes out without donning his long oilskin-type traveling coat with collar turned way up; he claims he is always cold, and with his gaunt stature there may be some truth in that. Living comfortably and enjoying the niceties of rank, the majority of his clothes are well-tailored, though plain, in subdued shades of browns and grey.
Magic Type: Like all Dar'keeli he has the ability to shapeshift, a gift believed to have been bestowed on his people by Thaedor himself. His animalia form is a great Golden Eagle. He is well-schooled in the transformational art and maintains an iron control of his abilities; he can even master the renowned shift phases, which his former position and training on Kylindreal encouraged.
Skills & Abilities: In his former life Ethon was a practicing lawman and an active pacifist. He has been involved with politics since his youth (though not an active choice) and is a passionate orator when called upon. However, he prefers more to observe and perceive, and is a keen judge of character.
Personality Strengths & Weakness: Allright, I admit it…. Ethon is a brooder. One of those serious brooders with the agonizingly pensive air and feigned disinterest in the concerns of others, complete with a shock of sleek, liquid hair falling forward to shade those deep and smoldering amber eyes…. XD Okay, kidding, kidding! But he does know how to get his brood on, and will lapse into that tendency when he’s feeling sorry for himself; for the most part it’s kept causally in check, and he’d be quite abashed if pointed out to him.
He’s terribly serious, with little time for nonsense or stupidity, and prides himself on his lack of humour. This isn’t to say he hasn’t got one, or is incapable of a lighter mood, rather he seems damned determined to not enjoy himself if he can! The austere facade softens somewhat in the presence of those who know him best, and in the face of absolute need. He respects effort, and honesty, and if someone presents with those qualities he won’t disparage them, though he’s never one to lavish compliments. He’s a bit stern.
He encompasses acute moral fortitude, and while he’s willing to wade into the greyer areas as the situation dictates, his life focus has been to seek justice and speak for those without a voice. He worked as a practitioner of law, pressing for humane rights and demanding accountability from his superiors. It is also prudent to state that this was done chiefly on an intellectual plane, rather then a personal one: Ethon spent the mass of his time within the city capital, lobbying officials and reconstituting written law; it may have been on behalf of the people but he did not dwell among them, or share in their plight. Ethon remains aloof and inaccessible, both personally and professionally.
Character History/Backstory: Ethon Ruenkhor heralds from a moderate social echelon, a position owed to him by birth, and he grew up relatively privileged. And once it became apparent that his chosen animalia was of rare winged origin, he was spared a typical military life and instead cultured for something greater. Thus the young Dar'keeli was thrice blessed, being of good standing by birth, educated by decree, and avian of body.
He didn’t always feel the fruits of his situation; as a youth he was a bit of a loner, and lacking a more dramatic skin pattern which Dar’keeli found attractive, he was rather self-conscious. If not for his sister Salene, Ethon would have contently spent the lot of his time hidden away in his room focused on his studied.
Three years his younger, Salene was also an avian shifter, and together they were family, best friends, their whole world. As was tradition, they left their parents to be raised by the state, a privilege bestowed only on those so gifted or personally marked by the counsel. The two children were like reflections, night and day – where he was reserved, she was cheerful and engaging; she led, he followed, he worried, she thrived. He was a smoldering sun to her careless moon, and even in avian form they mocked the other – Ethon dark and golden, the honed precision of an eagle, while Salene’s shift was silvery, ethereal, and mythically phoenix-like. Yet, the two were completely inseparable. Ethon always maintained that his duty was to watch over Salene, but often he wondered if it wasn’t she who took care of him...
Avian shifters are a rare enough thing; two in one family is exceptional. It was no wonder then that they tended to attract attention, and Salene flourished with it. Ethon would have done happily without but could not deprive his sister of anything, so by her lead aimed to please. In time he even learned social graces and mingled easily with their cohort, and the counsel was much pleased with their prodigies.
But not all attention was good; rivals of the highborn had singled the pair out. It could have been simple jealousy, a slight of face, but in a culture so shaped by war and ruled by suspicions and fear excuses are too easily found to inflict violence on another.
The attack itself remains a blur, but for Ethon there were two definite outcomes – there was a fight; he was taken by force and tortured under suspicion of a crime he did not commit, and Salene was gone.
Eventually, Ethon was cleared of any wrong-doing fully pardon, if not left unscarred. After this point, the young man found that all the doors of society opened for him, but he could not dispute the notion that it was so done out of pity, and instead threw himself into his work rather then socialize. His studies done, he was a practicing lawman and thus afforded seamless access to the workings of the city and a first-row seat to the growing forces of rebellion and war. Despite his personal sufferings, he never lost his humanity; perhaps it made him even moreso, and more driven. He was a recognized pacifist, and while this was not a crime he was also very careful not to direct his opposition towards the counsel; that would have been treason, and Ethon was no fool.
It is really no surprise then that he finally defected.
Why did he wait so long? Who knows... maybe it took him that long to get sick of it. Or the impending attack on other worlds was the final straw. Or maybe he just wanted to be financially set before heading elsewhere. Or maybe he was just bored. So he left, his ship hired out by a handful of hopeful rebels, and they came to land in the Elven Kingdom….
(( Maybe we should just stamp "damaged goods" on his forehead now and be done with him?? ;D))

Name: Nate Amaray Age: 23 Race: Human Gender: M Height: 5’7
RP Colour:Aqua Companion: none
Nate believes this world is all a matter of Y2K gone very, very wrong...
Physical Appearance & Apparel: Nate is the epitome of averageness - brown hair, brown eyes, if maybe a little on the short side. He freckles in the sun, if he manages to get any, and hair is kept short and meticulously gelled to achieve the perfect rolled-out-of-bed look. He does put a lot of stock in personal grooming, and his clothes are all designer labels.
Magic Type: none
Skills & Abilities: Nate works in NYC as a production assistant. It’s thankless job, running around and seeing that every aspect of whatever film he’s working on is running smoothly. He’s good at it, and can certainly hold his own in the cut-throat world of big budget Hollywood productions. Like everyone else in the industry, he has aspirations to be a director someday, and will do whatever he needs to get ahead.
Personality, Strengths & Weakness: You’re forewarned – Nate can be real dick. It’s nothing to take personal, it’s just the way he is, a trait carefully honed and cultivated. It probably has to do with the amount of stress he’s under with his job, where he can usually be found yelling into his cell phone on one hand, cigarette in the other. He’s a bit of a chain smoker but he’ll never admit it, though this could explained why he’s a bit jumpy He probably doesn’t handle stress all that well either, but since he can’t remember a time he wasn’t stressed he doesn’t know the difference; denial is a *good* place for him.
He’s used to things being a little crazy, but always within reasonable limits. I mean, he can handle the 17th hour on set with the talent gone missing, the director flailing, producers running around like beheaded chickens and a having just received a phone call that tomorrow’s location is under three feet of water… but mystical kingdoms? talking animals? no cell phone reception? And being out of smokes?
He is also terrified of Elves. Or maybe just Mel…
Character History/Backstory: Nate wandered through a Gate on December 31st, 1999, and landed in Elven Kingdom; thus he believes this all to be the worst case Y2K scenario play out in real. At the time we run into him in the RP he’s only been there three weeks by his timing and has run out of cigarettes...

Name: Lyonee Ameline Lassier LEE-oh-NEE AH-muh-leen LASS-see-aye (Lyonee rhymes with peony, not baloney XD) Age: 10 Race: Human Gender: female Height: 4'
Companion: none yet, she’s still young RP Colour: FFFFAB
Lyonee is a quiet child who is content to sit and watch the world around her. This is mostly because that was what she was told to do from a very young age. Chances are, once she’s had the opportunity to try otherwise – it will be quite difficult to hold this budding personality back!
Physical Appearance & Apparel: Lyonee is a small, wispy child with short blond hair that curls gently around her face. Her brown eyes are quite serious and often look a bit perplexed, as if drawn by some private worry. Her complexion is quite pale and her constitution seems weak (though she has had no recent illness - it's more the fear of illness has kept her from the rough-and-tumble of childhood that would have put some colour in her cheeks!).
Her outfit is a simple smock-type dress in light patterned blue flowers with a white collar and sash (dress style examples here: xxx) She also keeps loosing her sunbonnet.
Magic Type: n/a
Skills & Abilities: Lyonee is too young yet to have any marked skills, though she does enjoy books and is a good student. She also likes to draw, and was often scolded for doing so inside the covers of her books (she just thought books were better with pictures; and if they didn’t have any, she would add them). Having lived an isolated life, she hasn’t had the opportunity to try many things, but is a quick study and is curious about the world. Occasionally, her parent’s ingrained worry about her health will be counter-productive in that regard, stalling her before she even begins, but with time it is believed she can over come these doubts and begin to experience a full life – both on earth, and Kalidore.
Personality Strengths & Weakness: For the most part, Lyonee is a contented child. She’s independent, and can entertain herself for hours. Until she's bored. And then she will clamour for attention at length. She’s also more accustomed to the company of adults, having never been around many children her own age. She has a quick mind and likes to examine things in detail, but at the same time tends to keep most of those thoughts to herself; let’s face it – in an era of “children seen and not heard” she was rarely asked for her opinion anyways. This doesn’t mean she won’t give it, at length, but she has to feel comfortable with those around her first. Or is bored.
Since it was impressed upon her so frequently, she has an over-developed sense of her own mortality, or maybe just mortality in general. And this isn't taken in any kind of dreary way either, but rather quite practically and with an uncanny ability to relate nearly everything back to those already deceased ("You have a pet griffon? I read a story about a griffon once; it died." etc) She has also read though many of the medical books her parents kept around the house, and is happy to offer a diagnostic to any ailment you might have, and the more likely it is to kill you, the better.
Relationships: None yet – she’s shiny new!
Character History: Born to a nouveau riche family in France, Lyonee saw the 20th century herald in with much pomp and fanfare from her bedroom window. Actually, this was how she experienced most of the world, for having been a sickly baby, her parents were very protective of her. It was horribly feared that her weakened lungs made her a magnet for consumption, and so she was tutored at home away from the other children and spent her summers in the French country side to escape the pollution of the city.
Her father was an affluent business man who often traveled and her mother a bubbling socialite, so generally Lyonee saw more of her governess and tutor then she did either of her parents. Her brother Olivier (oh-LIVE-ee-aye), being four years her junior, existed in the perfect state of unruly bratty brotherness and Lyonee tried to avoid him as best she could. Lucky for her, the phrase “I am unwell today” excused her from just about anything (Olivier included), though in truth became a bit of a crutch. Lyonee is certainly capable of a great deal more then anyone thinks, herself included; perhaps here on Kalidore, with no preconceptions to be had, Lyonee will blossom into courageous and confident little character.

Name: Adrik of Lockworth Age: 28 Race: Human Gender: M Height: 5’10
Companion: none RP Colour: MediumPurple
Tyden spent his formative years in Ardenbourough, learning under the aged knight Sir Geraint. His best friend and general accomplice in all sorts of trouble was Adrik, the clerk’s son. Though slightly more reserved, Adrik certainly share’s Tyden’s sense of fun, while his tendency to more willing contemplate a situation has worked to save the latter’s respective backside more time the naught Physical Appearance & Apparel: Despite having the unfortunate privileged of being ever compared to Tyden by proximity, Adrik is a well-built and capable looking man in his own right. His features, while not a strong as his friend’s, are clean and well-placed, his eyes blue and blond hair darkened to warm sand over the years. The freckles which plagued him in youth are happily vanished, and his physique is fit, though just starting to fill out comfortably with comfort and age. Skills & Abilities: Adrik was always a good student and paid attention to his lessons, indeed, whenever Tyden was stumped on something Adrik was the one he sought for the answer; not to say that Tyden wasn’t clever himself, rather, it was more the discipline to stay at a task which Adrik excelled at. Following his father as castle clerk, these books smarts aid him well in his day-to-day work.
Accomplished with a bow (something he could happily crown over Tyden as youths) Adrik likes physical activity though his job leaves less and less time for it. He prefers walking to riding (never having his friend’s animal acuity) and has the fortune to enjoy a good constitution, despite having been rather skinny and pale as a child. Personality Strengths & Weakness: Steady and resolute, Adrik never once resent playing sidekick to Tyden’s follies, mostly because he preferred having the ability to step back to observe the whole more completely. Plus he is fundamentally easy-going, with little hang-ups and genuine sense of fun. He is not extraordinarily outgoing but he doesn’t hang back either, and is happy to take things as they come, content with the fact that he has always put forth his best effort.
Adrik is forthcoming and honest, mostly because trying to lie tends to bring on an uncomfortable flush. He would be hard pressed to name someone he truly dislikes, because he strives to see the best in people. He is however not naive, nor would he ever be called a pushover. He stands up for what he believes in, and for the people he cares about, but if it came to a dispute or disagreement Adrik will try and resolve it as efficiently and quietly as possible. He does not try to stand out or make waves.
And while his personal tendencies are to work well within the lines, Tyden’s influence shows through in his willingness to be open-minded and consider new things; he might not think entirely outside the box, but unlike many people in Ardenbourough he readily acknowledges that a world beyond that box might quite possibly be there. Character History/Backstory: Born the only son of castle’s clerk, his mother was at first reluctant to allow for his training as a knight, but the importance for a boy to be well versed and affluent could not be lost on her. Thus, Adrik grew up alongside Tyden while under the guidance of Sir Geraint, and from the beginning the boys were inseparable. And while it generally seemed like Tyden was the due’s governing force, Adrik’s patience and resolve would often outlive his more impetuous friend’s directive in the long run.
Upon completion of training, Adrik happily chose to follow in his father’s footsteps, married the lovely Ellie, and proceeded to start a family. The speed with which this all happened rather startled his best friend, who was sure Adrik would want to go canvassing the countryside in search of adventure; Tyden thus went on to do this on his own, and Adrik remained contented in Ardenbourough.
Upon Sir Geraint’s death, he and Ellie took in the Lady Geraint so that she might remain in the village, rather then moving off to live with one of her daughters in distant holds; it was an arrangement that was agreeable to everyone, and the Lady acts as devoted grandmother to couple’s children.
At last count, there were four – Emelot (9), Geraint (8), Bricia (5), and Isolde (4). Adrik is very fond of his children and a doting father, and enjoys teasing Tyden about niceties of married life whenever he comes to visit.
Of Tyden’s other life, Adrik has never really been told, though he suspects as much and is certainly not oblivious to the various hints. Out of respect for his friend’s privacy he says nothing, trusting that Tyden will tell him when it’s within his means.
Atherton has always been a natural caregiver. She is an extremely balanced person, comfortable and confident in self, level-headed and serene; she has experienced hardship and loss, but has not allowed these to defeat her, instead using those experiences to grow and better empathize with other people.
Atherton exudes assurance and calm; she's pretty unflappable. (Partly, she's seen a lot, lived a lot, and after her experiences in *** and Kalidore, declares nothing will ever surprise her again). Not afraid to get her hands dirty, and steady in the in the face of crisis, Atherton is an active member in building the village and organizing the community. She is certainly not without faults, but does her best to work through them and deal with her feelings honestly.
Atherton is spiritual, owing her trust in God with her ability to move through the dark times in her life and handle whatever comes her way. She is not in any way pushy with her own religion, and respects the different faiths of others with the same reverence. Her beliefs are a lot more Gnostic then average Christian: she understands God as the essence of all that is good - strength, hope, love, laughter - and through that connection (no matter by what name it's called) people can achieved all manners of greatness.
She believes everything happens for a reason, even if we cannot understand it at the time. A copy of the serenity prayer hangs in her office, as she concurs that they are good words to live by (although I'm sure some people make her reference it more often then others, lol)
Honesty, Empathy, Dignity - cornerstones of Atherton's life philosophy and how she deals with the world. She's there to help, however she can, but she's not there to save people; she will give them the tools and offer support, but realizes they must do the work themselves. However, she's about to give up on anyone that easily, either!
Kalidorian Occupation: Atherton will take up residence as the village doctor - healer, herbalist, and midwife.
Unicorn & Companion: Soothsayer came across the newly-arrived Atherton as she sat frowning in the garden, trying to make odds and ends of Liliani's strange Kalidorian herbs. "Thyme, basil, oregano... those I know; but these others are books I've never read. Just when I think I'm too old for learning new tricks, He presents me with a bag of them, just to keep me humble - and sharp."
The mare pricked her ears, grinning wryly. "I imagine there are far worse inflictions to be struck down with from above; cherish simply that it was your manner humble and wit sharp and not the other way around."
Atherton began to laugh, quietly at first, growing into the warm encompassing belly laugh of old friends, for it seemed to her in that instant that she and the old mare had known each other forever. The strange, tangled web that Kalidore had first appeared was growing clearer already, as if each uncanny plant were a language she could understand, had only mis-forgotten.
"Come," said Soothsayer, "the ones you are looking for are over here." And Atherton followed, not blindly, but with full knowledge that this is was the path life had opened for her, shining like dew on rich green leaves...
Back story: The eldest daughter of Horatio and Margaret Buxton, Atherton grew up during the fuitatiron of the civil rights movement in the US. Her father was a bookkeeper by day, but her mother described him as "musician, poet, dreamer", in that order; he marched with Martin Luther King Jr, was an active leader in their community church, and a strong advocate of human rights & the unity of all people. He died when Atherton was twelve, shot outside the local convenient store when he tried to break up an argument between rival youths.
It was her father who encouraged Atherton and her sister Andalusia to be whatever they wanted to be. So Atherton decided she wanted to be a doctor. But while some people have stories of valiant teacher steering them towards their dreams, as a young black girl in the late sixties, Atherton had no such champion. In fact, her eighth grade teacher snickered, and suggestion secretarial employment might be more her venue, since she had such lovely penmanship.
Atherton made good grades, but knew there was no future for her beyond high school; besides, her mother didn't have the money for college. She met Robert Weiss in the school choir (both she and her sister were avid singers, and sung in their church choir, too) and they married right out of high school. Robert's family was split over the inter-racial marriage, but with her family core secure, this didn't bother Atherton; she was content to let narrow-minded people cloister themselves and be done with it. And besides, she was too busy raising babies - three little boys in five years - to worry about the opinions of others or the state of the world. When her husband was offered a secured teaching position in the next city, it was a simple move.
Life was generally uneventful; her husband taught, and while the boys were little, Atherton was active in the community, church, and parent groups. When the boys were older, she worked part time as a caretaker in an retirement home. She never considered going back to school or pursuing old interests, she genuinely enjoyed the life she had, and was content to help people in her own way, where she could.
Robert passed to a reoccurring heart condition at 52, and Atherton found the empty house too enclosing. With her boys all busy with families of their own (there were four grandchildren and counting), she decided to join the church mission which travelled to impoverished places all over the world.
She realized, she had always wanted to see Africa, and when the opportunity arose, she took it. She had been there for nearly a year when she inadvertently passed through a Gate and into the Fae world.
Brom found her wandering in the woods, and brought her to the colony. There she has made do as she always does, making the best of the situation and doing what she can to help and care for those around her.
