Beauty is Relative: The Story of Amaryllis
By Liria ~
The world being completed, Kala laid down to rest in tranquility at the place that would soon be known as Kala's Peace. This place was teeming with flowers and rich vegetation, that all seemed to pull closer and closer with their green tendrils towards Kala's mythical persona, just to get a chance to feel a pulse of her magical energy. Even trees here, instead of going their usual way towards the sun, grew in an odd horizontal direction towards the unicorn. Thus soon, a large canopy enveloped, surrounded, and protected her to create a pleasant sleeping place.
Of course, when one slumbers, in a place of great serenity and calm, they wander in and out of dreams. Kala was no exception, and perhaps could be considered the most imaginative creator of beautiful and fantastical dreams. Her powers so mighty and endless (At least in the trees' points of view, for in these lands, the trees thought too.), occasionally these dreams came into being when Kala felt that they were worthy of being greater than just a fantasy.
These dreams produced creatures of all shapes and sizes, and they roamed throughout the sanctuary Kala and the forest had created. Wild unicorns roamed in, around, and about, careful not to step too quickly or trod too heavily, or else suffer the consequences of waking their beloved Lady.
It was in one of Kala's breathtaking and splendid dreams that Kala first thought of the Amaryllis flower...
In the dream, the mists of Time, endless and forever, stretched out in all directions. Kala's all-knowing eyes pondered at why she had come to the crossroads, the changing of paths, in her dream and as she questioned this, there before her materialized a small plant bulb. It hung in midair, and slowly the bulb began to sprout two stems that were devoid of any foliage.
Kala was transfixed at the sight, for she had never before seen a plant so plain. The stems continued to grow taller and taller, until the new plant stood as tall as the unicorn. Its thick green stalks were unadorned and unembellished in any way. Kala began to despise the plain life form, and closing her eyes, it started to wither away. Blinking her eyes open again, she saw the plant's misfortune, and cried at its demise. She then saw the plant grow youthful again, and added were great funnel-shaped flowers in colors of link pink and white. It was then that she noticed how its simplicity at first was truly beautiful.
Tears in her eyes, she cried out, "Dear plant, I am sorry that because of my dislike for your plainness, your health lingered away until your stalks had become emaciated... I-I am not a being that should feel hate," she paused and took a deep breath, "for hate is something only mortals feel in their urge to become successful in their lives. In being so powerful, I hurt you physically without realizing it. Only after you were healed and continued to grow your beautiful flowers, did I realize how beautiful you were even before you blossomed."
She then closed her eyes, and spoke in a soft voice, "This is unjust to you, and because of this...I will grant you the gift of Life so that you will become a real plant in my world, plain and simple as you are at first. You will grow to create a family of thousands like yourself, to teach even beings like myself, of how hate is foolish and vapid when someone hates because of appearance. Even the most simple and perhaps unattractive life form has an underlying beauty, and it takes a great and good creature to find it. Once they learn to appreciate your simpleness, you will show them your ravishing blooms and prove that you truly are beautiful."
At this, she sighed and woke from the dream. In the meadow where she slumbered now appeared a simple sprout. In a few months' time it would grow to become a large plant, greater in stature than even the one in her dream. All of the woodland creatures thought it simple but marvelous, and once it began to bloom, it became the most cherished flower in all of Kala's Peace.
But in blossoming, this particular flower not only opened up to reveal its colorful sepals, but also an even more divine creature: Amaryllis the unicorn, daughter of Kala.
