Hopefully, this backstory isn't too in depth... this is actually just a summary of the story I have started for her (I started writing a few nights ago, and have only just gotten past the 3rd paragraph of the summary >.>)
Name: Brigid ó Conaill
Age: 19
Race: Human (Irish)
Gender: Female
Height: 5'1"
Companion:
RP Colour: maybe B2F0D1?
Physical Appearance & Apparel: A little on the short side, by modern standards, her 5'1" is rather average, or even tall, for the era she is from. She has a feminine, curvy build, with a bit of working muscle, from helping her mother with the land. Fair skin that burns easily is her least favorite trait, but one that goes hand-in-hand with her light, coppery auburn hair. Her light amber eyes are a bit unusual, and she usually wears colors that complement both their color and her hair. One of her preferred outfits is a dark green riding skirt, with a cream blouse.
Magic Type: none yet
Skills & Abilities: Experienced rider (sidesaddle only), has a variety of farm-related skills (with crops and with smaller farm animals), cooks and bakes reasonably well
Personality Strengths & Weakness: She's fairly average for her culture, not particularly outspoken, knows a woman's "proper" place, and is content with this. While she is a romantic, and loves to hear tales of true love, she is very aware that this is an unlikely outcome for her own life.
Relationships: Second cousin, Aislinn Donelly; betrothed, Dolan O'Malley
Character History -
Where on earth is your companion from? Ireland (Cinn Mhara)
What era is your your companion from? 1830s
What first brought her and her unicorn together? we'll see XD
Back Story: She grew up on a tenant farm in Ireland, with her mother. Her father was lost at sea when she was fairly young, but the landlord took pity on her mother, Moira, and allowed her to continue living on and working a portion of the land her husband had been working. Brigid's older brother Liam did much of the heaviest work, with Brigid and her mother working the slightly less strenuous jobs. This worked quite well for them, and while they were not wealthy, they got by.
When Brigid was seventeen, tragedy came calling. First Liam, then Moira contracted cholera, and while it managed to skip Brigid completely, neither her mother or brother survived. After the funeral, Moira's cousin, Aislinn, took in her cousin's daughter. This brought a significant change to the young farmgirl's life, as Aislinn had married a rather successful merchant, and lived a luxurious (to Brigid) life in the city (Galway).
Adjusting to life in the city wasn't easy, there were far more rules for a "well-to-do" young lady of society than there had been as a poor farmgirl, and many lessons to learn. Of all the "proper" lady's skills (needlepoint, music, etc), and the various other things her cousin felt a "proper, modern" young lady should learn (mathematics, art), the horseback riding was her favorite. Aislinn even outfitted her with a proper sidesaddle, riding habit, and her own horse. For her eighteenth birthday, she received a small white kitten with odd-eyes, one blue, one amber-gold. Aislinn called it an Ankara cat; Brigid named him Emir, and he was soon her inseparable companion.
A few weeks later, Aislinn told Brigid that she was looking into potential husbands for the girl. A portrait was painted, and though Brigid didn't think it was a truly accurate likeness, it was sent off to various people. Over the next several months, Aislinn (and to a lesser extent, her husband) made arrangements for several of the interested suitors to come and discuss the potential match. Several were dismissed as unsuitable, and Brigid was always consulted before a final decision was made. Finally, an interested young man, an illegitimate but acknowledged and landed son of an earl, was found acceptable to both Aislinn and Brigid, and while she had never met the man, and could not be in love with him, Brigid was not opposed to the arrangement.
The plans were made, and shortly after her nineteenth birthday, she found herself on her way to marry Dolan O'Malley. They were on the road from Galway to his home outside Murrisk, when their carriage was attacked by highwaymen. The horses spooked and bolted when the driver was shot, taking the carriage on a wild ride through the woods, finally overturning. Her escort, a guard hired by Aislinn, was pinned inside the carriage, and Brigid knocked about, but otherwise uninjured. The guard told her to run and hide in the forest, he would find her once he had freed himself and the bandits had gone.
Praying he was right, she did as he asked, and ran. As she was unfamiliar with the terrain, she was not graceful in her flight, and fell often, though she refused to cry out when she did, afraid she might give herself away to any pursuers (assuming they couldn't hear her crashing through the brush, but she tried not to think about that). Finally, she found a small cluster of bushes and crawled through the branches, pulling herself into the small space between the shrubs. Her cat's basket must have been thrown clear of the wrecked carriage and damaged, as a few moments after tucking her skirts around her legs, she saw Emir bounding towards her hiding spot.
They spent the night, cold and uncomfortable, in the bushes, and while the cat seemed at ease, Brigid could barely close her eyes for a moment before thinking she heard the bandits approaching. By morning, no one had come anywhere near her hiding spot, so she took a chance and extricated herself from the clinging branches. And found herself completely lost. Even the trees looked foreign, though she was sure they had been familiar when she had fled through them the evening before. Emir twined himself about her ankles, purring reassurance, and she bent to pet him. And when she straightened to try and regain her bearings, there was the unicorn...
