Name: Kyla
Age: 26
Race: Human
Gender: Female
Height: 5’10”
Companion: Midori
RP Color: olive drab
Physical appearance & apparel:
Kyla is tall and thin with an athletic build and brunette hair that falls in loose waves to about mid-way down her back. . Though it is lovely down, her hair is almost always pulled up with a hair tie or clip, as this is simply more practical when work needs to get done. Almost always in either jeans or scrubs, she takes pride in her appearance but never at the expense of practicality. At the time that she fell into Kalidore, she was wearing hiking boots, khaki cargo shorts, a long sleeved t-shirt with the sleeves rolled, and a khaki vest with numerous pockets to keep any essentials you wouldn’t want to risk losing should something unfortunate happen to your pack. Though she had a tent and numerous other camping supplies, those were left in the alcove she was residing in shortly before “falling” into Kalidore.
Magic type (if applicable): n/a
Skills & Abilities:
Though she is not truly a survivalist, she can handle her own if left alone in the wilderness with few supplies. She does love foraging for food, in part because actually growing anything is beyond her. She is also proficient in breaking down wild game, but always left the hunting part up to Brody. She is a marvelous cook, having spent much of her spare time either watching the Food Network or listening to it as background noise while studying in Med School.
Given her chosen profession, and that she was very near being able to go out on her own, Kyla is very proficient at first aide as well as emergency medicine. Due to a lack of medical supplies in Kalidore, Kyla’s expertise is limited to first aide, but the longer she stays the more likely it is she might just try to open her own “Kalidore Health Clinic”.
Personality Strengths & Weaknesses:
On Earth, Kyla was very career motivated. She had a good work ethic, and always strove to excel. She is friendly to a fault, often willing to bend over backwards to help complete strangers, which is part of why she chose the profession she did. Kyla is very science minded and has a very hard time grasping this whole concept of “magic”. Not that she didn’t love reading fairytales as a child, she had just learned not to expect happy endings after the most recent events in her life. This is real life, after all.
Kyla does NOT like it when people lie to her, and tolerates it very poorly when people are inconsiderate of other’s needs. Under these circumstances she tends to be a little on the snippy side, and sometimes is a little too quick to put others in their place. On the plus side, her fuse is not a short one, and her propensity to offer the benefit of the doubt tends to circumvent most altercations.
Relationships:
Brody - Kyla’s first ‘other half’, and soul mate if I dare say. He passed away tragically a few months prior to Kyla finding Kalidore.
Orange Cat - Kyla’s pet cat, who she left in her parents’ care back on earth. Now 2-3 years old, he was a gift to her from Brody and one that they both treasured dearly. With Brody gone, she now cares for that cat more than ever, as he is one of her few living ties to Brody; something they shared and loved equally.
Midori - Kyla’s newly found companion, and her second ‘other half’. Although on the road to recovery, the wound in Kyla’s heart at the loss of Brody still aches. Though it has been a slow process, that healing hastened slightly when Midori entered Kyla’s life.
Character History:
Kyla hails from the Denver, Colorado area on present day earth. After a recent tragedy, she quite literally fell into Kalidore, where she promptly and rather awkwardly met her companion, Midori.
Back Story:
Though the trail was well hidden, Kyla walked with confidence, almost as though it was only yesterday they had hiked it together. Her pack was heavy and her muscles burned from the exertion of the climb, but it was a welcome distraction from recent events past. Pausing to catch her breath, she thought back on the past few months; so much had happened, so much had changed.
Kyla met Brody as result of a very unfortunate incident in their college chemistry lab. How was she supposed to know that mystery Chemical A and Chemical B would ignite if left over the Bunsen burner too long—she was way too busy checking out the super cute Teacher’s Assistant to read such fine print in the lab manual! It wasn’t until the guy at the table behind her doused her with a very cold beaker full of water that she realized not only did the chemicals catch fire, but her hair had as well! Utterly shocked and humiliated, Kyla quickly dismissed herself, mumbling something about a change of clothes as she escaped into the empty hallway.
Everyone stared as she walked out, the professor was clearly livid, and the look on that TA’s face had been too much to bear—pure disgust and annoyance at her incompetence. Leaning against the wall she slid to the floor, contemplating how difficult it would be to switch lab sections. Just then, the door to the classroom opened, and she braced herself for what the irate professor would have to say. Instead of a lecture on safety, He knelt down next to her.
“I am so sorry. I looked up just as your hair caught fire, and, well, I’m sorry.” Kyla looked up to see this stranger for the first time. He knelt beside her, clearly abashed, but still good looking. Kyla was dumb-struck. In another attempt at apology he continued, “I… I heard you say something about a change of clothes, but you forgot your bag.” Looking at the offered bag, she sputtered, “I don’t have spares.”
Before she could start crying, as Kyla was very much so a sympathy crier, he jumped up, “Don’t worry, I do. Please, let me help.” As she nodded quietly, he disappeared back into the classroom only to return a few seconds later. “It isn’t much, but at least you can finish the lab with a dry shirt.” Looking up at him, Kyla took the shirt and thanked him before heading to the ladies room to change. The rest of lab was excruciating, but she survived.
As lab ended, the handsome stranger approached Kyla, “Sorry, I don’t think I ever got your name. Mine’s Brody.” Flushing a little bit while gathering her books, Kyla gave a faint smile and replied, “Kyla. Thanks for the help, well, mostly. I’ll, um, I’ll get this back to you at the next lab session?” She questioned as she gestured towards the borrowed shirt. A mischievous smile spread across Brody’s face as he replied, “Um, that’s not going to work for me. I’ll need the jersey back for practice this evening. Do you mind if I walk you home and we can trade then?” By the time they got to Kyla’s place, plans had already been made for a first date. The rest was history.
That was almost 5 years ago, and Brody had never stopped teasing about the drenching with a cold glass of water that it took to draw her attention from the brown-nosed TA. Kyla smiled at the memory before returning to her climb. Her life had been perfect. Brody and Kyla were both pre-med, so she was never without a lab partner again… and didn’t need to scam on not so nice TAs anymore either. Both of them were very athletic, loved the outdoors, and loved sports even more. It seemed there weren’t enough hours in the day for them to spend together; they were inseparable.
Kyla had finished medical school early that May. Brody was a year ahead of her, and just finishing up an internship before moving onto his residency. Luck had been in their favor, and they were both accepted at the same emergency hospital to finish out their medical training. At the end of May, only a few weeks before they were meant to start working at the clinic, the two of them finally tied the knot. It had been a glorious day, both families joking that “it was about darn time!” Less than a week later, it happened.
They were on their honeymoon, en route to a wine tasting at a nearby vineyard. Their light was green, but the SUV didn’t stop, didn’t slow down. By the time Brody saw it, it was too late. Kyla woke up 2 weeks later in a hospital bed. Her mother told her they had been T-boned… Brody didn’t make it. The driver of the SUV had been drinking; such an unfair thing to lose a loved one to—the ignorance of another. Brody was her whole world, her other half, and now he was gone. She couldn’t imagine life without him.
*Almost there, just a little farther* thought Kyla as the vegetation began to thin. It had been 2 ½ months since that day. Together, they had loved hiking, camping, climbing. She discussed it with his family, and they agreed it was what he would have wanted. Although she was new at the hospital, her superiors agreed to let her have the long weekend off, given the circumstances. It was a couple days trek to where she was going, and not an easy climb, but at long last the trees parted to reveal a beautiful azure sky.
Breathing hard, she once again took in the breathtaking views they had once shared. The trail dead-ended onto a rocky outcropping just large enough for a small tent and a little cooking fire. The wind had blown a small alcove into the cliff face that now offered meager but sufficient protection of said tent. At the edge of the ledge a smallish tree had managed take root and by some miracle always seemed to thrive.
Tears welling in her eyes, Kyla whispered, “This was our place. Our special place...” The last time she was here was with him. It had rained all weekend, and they looked like a couple of drowned rats. At the end of the weekend, when the rain had finally died down to a slow drizzle, Brody dragged her out the tent to the cliff’s edge. Under that small tree, Brody suddenly dropped to one knee and proposed. So surprised and shocked was Kyla that she dove into his arms—and almost threw them right over the edge! Crisis barely averted, they agreed to spend the rest of their lives together. *Together…*
With a frown, Kyla walked over to the alcove and dropped her pack. After only a little rummaging, she pulled out a small wooden box, which she gently held in her lap as she sat down against the pack. She took in everything as if it was her first time there (minus the rain)—the majesty of the mountains rising around her, the crisp clean air, the gentle rustle of tree leaves, the call of an eagle in the distance. Kyla sat there for hours, dwelling in the memories of times past… happier times.
The chill of the mountain air was just starting to numb her tear stained face as dusk settled on the alcove. She would need to set up camp soon, and couldn’t put it off any longer. Standing, Kyla gently carried the small wooden box to the cliff’s edge. She had loved him with all her heart, but it was time to let go. Hands shaking, she lifted the lid and opened the small plastic bag containing his ashes. As she began to tip over the box and bag a gentle breeze caressed her cheek, just as he had done so many times before to quell her worries and sorrows. For a moment Kyla felt as though he was there, saying his own private goodbye, and then the same gentle breeze whisked his ashes away.
Kyla watched as Brody’s ashes dissipated into the mountain winds. When his ashes were all but gone, she let out a sob. It suddenly felt as though he were pulling her away with him. As the cedar box fell from her hands, she braced herself against the tree. “Maybe I am not ready to say goodbye,” she cried, “maybe I need to go with him.” As a sudden strong wind began to pull at her clothes, time seemed to stand still. *Just. Breathe.* Spreading her arms like a bird, she cast herself into the wind… **
“OOOMPH!!!” A little shocked, Kyla sputtered for air. Breath caught, she rolled over to see a lacey patchwork quilt of blue sky and green leaves. *Where on earth am I?!?* She wondered. Looking around, it was clear she wasn’t on the mountain face anymore… but a fall like that should have killed her. She was a doctor, she would know! And all these trees… she didn’t recall falling through any branches. Actually, she didn’t really recall falling at all?! Maybe this was heaven? But where was Brody?
**note: Kyla had no intention of committing suicide, otherwise their families never would have let her make this climb on her own. Rather, she just happened to feel the pull of her companion through a gate, and since the only other being she ever felt that kind of connection with was Brody, she gave in to the pull and let herself fall.
